War, Tribute, and Trade
War was a key power to the Aztec's rise to power. They conquered towns and sometimes made alliances or partnerships. They made the people they conquered pay tribute. They were payed with cotton, gold, or food. They also controlled a huge trade network. Towns had markets where people traded. Merchants carried gems and rare foods. They were also spies. They grew stronger and conquered more people.
