Causes of the Defeat of the Aztecs

The few conquistadors defeated a this powerful empire with alliances, weapons, horses, geography, and disease. The conquistadors' important ally was Malintzin. She guided Cortez and was an interpreter for him. She helped him make allies with people who didn't like losing battles and paying tributes. The conquistadors had better armor, cannons, and swords. They brought horses which terrified the Aztecs because they've never seen them before. The conquistadors blocked Tenochtitlan's causeways, bridges, and waterways. Thousands of Aztecs died from starvation. The Spanish brought disease with them that affected the aztec communities. The Spanish forces had a tremendous advantage.
