After liberation
In fall 1945, a British Military Tribunal in Lüneburg tried 48 members of Bergen-Belsen staff, including 37 SS personnel and 11 prisoner functuaries.
The tribunal sentenced 11 of the 48 defendants to death, including Josef Kramer.
19 other defendants were sentenced to prison terms; then the tribunal acquitted 14.
In December 1945, British military authorities executed Kramer's co-defendant, and Josef Kramer.
