-Artist: Pablo Picasso

-Title: The Old Guitarist

-Medium: Oil Painting

-Provenance: Currently at The Art Institute of Chicago

-Source: http://www.artic.edu/aic/collections/artwork/28067

-Describe: Elderly shoeless man in ripped clothing holding a guitar. Unidentifiable background which seems to be either a glass window or door. Man has head down. Muted blues throughout image portraying a depressed mood but yellow-beige colored guitar adds a focal point.

-Analyze: Trapezoid shape made by the two feet, right shoulder, and head of the man. Lines in the background. Emphasis on the guitar made by the distinct change in color. Contrasting values of blue throughout painting. Boney texture on body of man. Smooth texture on guitar and clothes of man. Granite texture on ground which man sits upon. Asymmetrical balance.

-Interpret:

-Judgement:

-Interpret: The trapezoid shape made by the two feet, right shoulder, and head of the man represents the distorted body shape of the man and it almost seems he is sitting that way in result of a heavy weight on his shoulders. The emphasis on the guitar represents the significant of the instrument to the man. The man wraps his body around the guitar showing that not only does he own the guitar but the guitar is a part of him. The boney texture of the man's body represents the sharp yet weak state he is in. The contrasting shades if blue represent a gloomy mood of the man, while the yellow shade of the guitar represents a positive aspect of an ill-minded man's life.

-Judgement: This is a visually interesting and attractive piece which I feel connected with. Not only do I now connect with the piece on a whole new level after analyzing it, but it is my brother 's all time favorite painting. The artist has successfully communicated the mood and story of the man in the image through the use of color and placement of the mans body along with his facial expressions.
