In this book loss is what connects everyone. Oskar, his mom, his grandparents, everyone he meets while trying to find the key. They all have lost someone. All the characters take their loss differently. Oskar thinks about it all the time. His mom is trying to get over it. When Oskar goes to Ms. Black's house he sees she is sad. He try's to comfort her. Oskar does not have anyone to help him with his loss. He is trying to progress on his own but nobody is really there for him. Oskar is sad all book about his dad he never can seem to get over it. The author did a good job by using the loss as a connection to all the characters.
