- Mitochondrion is an organelle in all eukaryotic cell that help carry out cellular respiration which converts all the chemical energy that comes from food like sugar into the chemical energy of a molecule Adenosine Triphosphate (ATP: contains one adenosine molecule and three phosphate molecules)
- Cellular work is mainly made up of the energy source ATP
- The structure of Mitochondrion is similar to its function
- It is made up of two membranes (an inner membrane and an outer membrane), that are each a phospholipid belayer with a different collection of protein embedded.
- It also has two internal compartments: intermembrane space and mitochondrial matrix
- The intermembrane space is a narrow spot located between inner and outer membrane enclosing the mitochondrial matrix
- The mitochondrial matrix has the mitochondrial DNA and ribosomes and a lot of enzymes that catalyze some of the cellular respiration reactions
- The intermembrane space is folded with protein molecules that make ATP embedded in it which the folds that are called Cristae which increase the membranes surface area which enhance the ability of the mitochondrial to produce ATP
