The battle of Iwo Jima occurred because the Americans made their first airstrike on the Japanese island, Iwo Jima. About 20,000 Japanese fought against 110,000 Americans. But the retaliation was not enough, on March 26,1945 the Americans captured Iwo Jima. With nearly all Japanese defenders killed or missing, Americans lost 5,900 dead and 17,400 wounded.
