The Allied forces invaded the island of Okinawa on April 1,1945 and fought the Japanese in the bloodiest battle of WW2. The battle was nicknamed the "typhoon of steel" because of intense shelling and gunfire. During the battle the Japanese had strong resistance but not enough because after just 82 days Okinawa fell to the Allied forces. This was also the last major campaign in the Pacific War.
