Air travel took a major change after 911. Airport security was raised tremendously. Before the attacks, you didn't even have to show an ID to officials before entering the plane. Also, after the attacks, the U.S. formed the Transportation Security Administration that oversees what use to be private companies. The TSA is responsible for screening every airport in the country along with adding new security measures so that something like 911 may never happen again from the air. Doing all of this work, the TSA did the largest federal set up since that days of World War Two. The agency also needed to gather the names of every person who could pose a flight risk. So by 2007, the TSA had gathered 700,000 names, from what we know from the Department of Justice. Before 911, some airports allowed passengers to have box cutters of the flight, this is one of the weapons that was thought to be used by the hijackers.
