After the attacks on 911, many things changed. One of the big changes that happened was the formation of a new cabinet-level office. It's known as the Department of Homeland Security. This new agency combines 22 different agencies including Immigration and Naturalization Service and the US Customs Service were both once apart of the Department of Justice, are now apart of the ICE (U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement). The ICE is now apart of the Department of Homeland Security. Also because of 911, deportations climbed to record heights. From 1999 to 2001, there were about 200,000 deportations a year. This climbed from 2003 until in 2009 to 2010, there were double that amount, 400,000. Also there was a program established in 2008 that stated that all local law enforcement could check the immigration of every person booked in a county jail, even if they aren't found guilty of a crime. They could even check immigration status for minor infractions, such as not using a turn signal when needed.
