Cultural Life of Great Zimbabwe and Kilwa

Although Great Zimbabwe was a powerful trading nation, the people were self-sufficient in getting food for themselves, by having a rich farmland Zimbabweans would always have great crop production. Since the people were able to build magnificent structures including the Great Enclosure, they were believed to be an advanced and unique society. The great walls that were built by the inhabitants was a sign of the people's wealth and success. Their overall culture was that of wealthy persons; fine clothing, incredible buildings, and finally surplus of food.

Traditionally, Africans passed on knowledge through music and dance. Music and dance were part of ceremonies and rites of passage; in many places, they still are. Culture is still passed on through praise songs (equivalent to poems), stories, and proverbs. Rich families lived in fine houses of coral and stone. They slept in beds inlaid with ivory and their meals were served on porcelain. Wealthy Muslim women wore silk robes and gold and silver bracelets.

Millet was one of Great Zimbabwe's best crops 👇
