Fun Facts and Pictures about Great Zimbabwe and Kilwa

Great Zimbabwe is thought to be translated by the Shona language as "House of Rock".


Although the city collapsed many of its giant stone walls and mosques still remain today.


Since parts of Great Zimbabwe still survive, it is a religious center for prayer every year for pilgrims.


A very famous trader at the time, Ibn Battuta, visited Kilwa and was marveled by their successful empire.


Some of the first gold coins ever used in Eastern Africa were created in Kilwa.


Many of the buildings in Kilwa were Islamic style and made of coral stone.
