Overview of Great Zimbabwe and Kilwa.

Great Zimbabwe was the capital city for the Shona empire, it lasted from 1100-1500 A.D. Only about a fourth of the population of the civilization lived in Great Zimbabwe. Those who did live there were the king and his subjects, guards, doctors, and advisors. This area was chosen to be the capital because it had important trade routes for the empire. It was believed to have a low death rate and seemingly living conditions for everyone from king to subject.

Kilwa was a city-state founded by Kilwa Kisiwani that lasted from 1000-1400. It was very successful due to its location and resources. Since they were located on the East African coast on the Indian Ocean they were an important center for overseas trade with nations who wanted products from Africa. Kilwa was the most successful city-state on the coast because of its trade Great Zimbabwe which brought in gold, ivory, and other textiles.
