Demise of the Empire of Ghana and Mali...

-The empire of Mali fell with the death of Mansa Musa, because his sons could not hold the empire together.

-Smaller states broke away from the empire

-The Songhai empire took advantage of Mali's weakness and conquered the empire making an empire larger than both the Mali and Ghana empires.

-The fall of the empire of Ghana was due to the competition in the gold and salt trade with its neighboring empires and towns.

-Many of Ghana's competitors in this trade route were fearful and jealous of Ghana's success.

-The empire was weakened by serval invasions especially from the warfare from the Almoravids and lost its position in the gold and salt trade leaving the empire defenseless from further attack.

-Besides the frequent attacks on the empire, many citizens had also left Ghana because of a major drought that had brought a lack of food and water to the
empire.

-The military of Ghana was unorganized and could not defend the empire effectively.

-Ghana was conquered in the year 1240 and the surviving citizens were added to the growing empire of Mali.
