Social Classes
Jewish Palestine, where Jesus lived in the 1st century, was a part of the Roman Empire and governed by the Roman class structure. Birth, wealth, position and citizenship determined the social classes in the Roman Empire. No middle class existed in the Empire at this time and women were in the same class as their fathers or husbands.
