People were either born into slavery or sold into slavery through wars or piracy. Slaves were property of their owners. Some slaves could maintain their own savings, so they may eventually purchase their freedom. Freed slaves belonged to a separate class called, freed people and had limited rights. They could not move out of this class, though their children would be full citizens of Rome.
