This class made up the majority of the Roman citizenry. The commons were the Roman lower class. They were not slaves but full Roman citizens, which mean they held all the rights of Roman citizens and could legally marry another Roman citizen. The poor belonged to this class, as did artisans and anyone who did not own land.
