The romantic period developed a sense of idealism and emotion from nature. The impressionism period that followed the romantic period continued with the emotions and feeling within nature. However, the impressionism period blended the lines of artwork whereas the romantic period was more defined. Both periods captured imagination and a dreamlike quality (academic.brooklyn.cuny.edu).

The music that was composed during the romantic period had an affect not only on the periods that followed but also music we listen to today. The music focused more about emotions and feelings and is similar to contemporary music today. Shows on Broadway, opera and musicals are all grandchildren of the music in the romantic era. People started wanting the visual aspect of music (academic.brooklyn.cuny.edu).

Literature became more romantic and exotic with stories that were “natural and supernatural… The concept of the beautiful soul in an ugly body, as characterized in Victor Hugo's Hunchback of Notre Dame and Mary Shelley's Frankenstein” (academic.brooklyn.cuny.edu). These literary works are still widely popular today.
