Twelver Shiism

The Twelver Shiism was the religion of the Safavids. It said that there had been twelve infallible imams after Muhammad. The twelfth/"hidden" imam had gone into hiding around 874 to escape persecution, and they believed he was still alive and would return to take power and spread his true religion.
