Battle of Chaldiran
At the Battle of Chaldiran in 1514, the Ottomans deployed the Janissaries with firearms against the Safavids, who knew about gunpowder technology but declined to use it. The Safavids attacked the Ottoman line and suffered devastating casualties. Ismail slipped away, and the Ottomans occupied his capital at Tabriz. The Ottoman did not posses the resources destroy the Safavid state, and the two empires had intermittent conflict for the next two centuries.
