Janissary Corps
Through devshirme, the Ottomans got boys from the Balkans as slaves for the sultan. They received special training, learned Turkish, and converted to Islam. The ones who became soldiers were known as Janissaries, and quickly gained a reputation for loyalty to the sultan and readiness to employ new new military technology. Their forces were outfitted with gunpowder weapons used for battles and sieges.
