Smooth Muscle: Esophgus

• The esophagus connects the pharynx to the stomach.
• The muscular coat consists of an external layer of longitudinal fibers and an internal layer of circular fibers.
• The longitudinal fibers descend in the esophagus and combine to form a uniform layer that covers the outer surface of the esophagus.
• Smooth muscle tissue contracts in sequence to produce a peristaltic wave
