While this song could represent drugs, I chose it to represent the theme of suffering which is mostly faced by John. This song was written about loneliness and the way people cope. John confessed to Bernard that he felt very lonely, and as the novel progresses and John loses his mother, he chooses to cope through self inflicted pain. In doing so, he believes that he can regain his humanity or become spiritually cleansed; however, by the end of the novel, he feels so much guilt and disgust for his actions that he commits suicide.
