Impact

The Chainstitch vs The Lockstitch

The Chainstitch only uses one thread creating a weaker hold

The Chainstitch tends to unravel if the thread is cut or broken and the entire stick will come undone

Uses more thread and becomes more expensive

The Lockstitch uses two threads and creates a strong, sturdy hold.

If a thread breaks or is cut it will not unravel as it is "Locked" in place

Uses less thread and is cheaper to produce

Takes less time to produce an article of clothing

Howe was the first to place the eye of the needle at the point instead of the end. This way the needle "pushes" the thread through instead of "pulling"

The sewing machine turns a 14 hour job into a simple 1 hour job

Speeds up production=cheaper cost for clothing

More product in less time

Offers more job opportunities for people in factories to sew clothing and manufacture sewing machines

Clothing no longer becomes a necessity for people and more of a luxury and they can focus on style instead of function
