That Shaped Healthcare

The 20th Century

Hospital, physicians, and other health care providers were paid by health insurance companies on the basis of what providers billed for their services.

1. The Progressive party included national health insurance for the United States in it’s platform in 1912.

4. During WWII (1939-1945), a medical plan started by Henry J Kaiser for his employees featured a pre-paid program that paved the way for Health Maintenance Organizations (HMOs)

2. Blue Cross was established at the end of the 1920s. It was the first large medical insurance company.

3. Fee-for-Service was the career expectation for physicians till the Great Depression.
