The 20th Century
A broader form of prepaid employer-provided hospital care appeared at the end of the 1920s when a group of Dallas teachers arranged for Baylor hospital to provide 21 days of hospitalization to its members in return for a $6.00 annual payment.
The Baylor insurance was developed as
a way to ensure that people paid their bills.
1. The Progressive party included national health insurance for the United States in it’s platform in 1912.
4. During WWII (1939-1945), a medical plan started by Henry J Kaiser for his employees featured a pre-paid program that paved the way for Health Maintenance Organizations (HMOs)
2. Blue Cross was established at the end of the 1920s. It was the first large medical insurance company.
3. Fee-for-Service was the career expectation for physicians till the Great Depression.
