That Shaped Healthcare

The 20th Century

Following the lead of the European countries that had created tax-supported, government-run health care schemes, the Progressive party included national health insurance for the United States in its party platform in 1912.


World War I and public opposition defeated the measure at the national level. By 1915, the drive for national insurance had shifted to the states.

1. The Progressive party included national health insurance for the United States in it’s platform in 1912.

4. During WWII (1939-1945), a medical plan started by Henry J Kaiser for his employees featured a pre-paid program that paved the way for Health Maintenance Organizations (HMOs)

2. Blue Cross was established at the end of the 1920s. It was the first large medical insurance company.

3. Fee-for-Service was the career expectation for physicians till the Great Depression.
