Dr. Samuel Howe (refer to picture in the bottom right of slide) was a abolitionist, physician, and advocate for education in the nineteenth century. He was born on November 10, 1801 and found the Perkins School for the Blind. He made books with large fonts for people with a sight impairment can "read" with their figures.

M A J O R

Horace Mann (refer to picture on the right) was born May 4, 1796. He was a Whig that was devoted to speeding up modernization. Mann was also a politician and education al reformer. He was also became the first secretary for the board of education, lengthened the school year to 6 months, and improved the school curriculum. Mann went on to be the founder of Antioch University, Bridgewater State University, Framingham State University, and Westfield State University.
