Horace Mann: he felt that the common school would be a great equalizer for society. He thought that it was essential for the harmony and stability of society.

Noah Webster: created the American Dictionary of 1828. Wrote grammatical institute of the English language.

John Joseph Hughes: led the movement for denominational public schools so the large Irish-Catholic immigrant population wouldn't have to read out of the King James Bible.
