Symbolism

Symbolism is the use of symbols to represent ideas or qualities. A very good example of symbolism can be seen in "Cask of Amontillado". Both Montresor and Fortunado, wear costumes that symbolize the roles they play in the short story. Montresor wears a mask of black silk symbolizing the deliverer of death. Fortunado wears a jester costume, symbolizing the fool that he is. "The man wore motley. He had on a tight-fitting parti-striped dress and his head was surmounted by the conical cap and bells."
