Foreshadowing
Foreshadowing is an advance sign or warning of what is to come in the future, and can be used to build suspense for the reader. An example of foreshadowing can be seen in Edgar Allen Poe's short story "Cask of Amontillado". In the story, Montresor seeks vengeance against Fortunado, and plans to murder him. The majority of the story takes place in the catacombs, creepy tunnels filled with graves. This sense of death in the catacombs foreshadows the death of Fortunado that is to take place later in the story.
