Impact and Long Lasting Effects of Sugar Plantatoins

Sugar plantations dictated life in the Portuguese Empire, and the Empire ran on it. Colonial Brazilian life revolved around the sugar mill, which mixed agriculture with industry. Those that planted sugar became the landed nobility, sort of like the manor system. These plantations led to the growth of slavery, and would cause much turmoil in the empire later on. These places caused an influx of slaves as the natives resisted farm labor and succumbed to diseases brought by the Europeans, so slaves were brought in their stead.
