Formation of multicultural societies in European societies
During the colonization of the Americas, migration patterns were heavily dominated by males. Over 85% of Spanish migrants were men, leading to an uneven ratio of men to women. This caused the men to begin to enter into relationships with indigenous women, creating children of mixed, or mestizo, heritage. Additionally, many Portuguese men entered relationships with indigenous women due to the same reasons, leading to the rise of mulattoes, or people with Portuguese and indigenous heritage. As multicultural societies began to grow, their influence began to become essential to the economies and social hierarchies of the Colonial Americas
