- birthmarks are congenital blemishes or spots on the skin, visible at birth or soon after 

- symptoms include abnormally dark or light skin, growth of hair from pigmented skin, skin lesions, etc.

- can be treated if young, most permanent and harmless

- vascular birthmarks are not genetic and other birthmarks are typically not considered genetic

- most birthmarks are permanent but certain ones can be removed (usually when young) with laser surgery or surgical removal 

- anyone can have birthmarks

- typically they are harmless and do not have any other effects
