The Spanish and Portuguese first saw the Western Hemisphere as a place to exploit and rule then to settle and colonize. When they first went to settle in the Americas, they brought a lot of new technologies that were unavailable to the people they encountered. There were divisions between the indigenous people Europeans put use to. They toppled the Aztec and Incas and imposed their own rule in Mexico and Peru. Decades later the Portuguese planters built sugar plantations on the coastline of Brazilian.
