How does the youth criminal justice act work?
When a young person commits a crime or breaks a law, they are dealt by a police officer. The officer has four choices to choose from, for the young person's consequence.
1. You may be given a warning. It may come with a letter for your parents or guardians
2. You may not be charged but might be appointed to a program, counselling or community service.
3. You may be charged. When you get charged, you get a procedutor, who is a lawyer that will use evidence to show you are guilty or not of breaking the law.
4. You may be brought to court and The judge will decide your consequence. Certain factors would determine what your fate will be.
A) your attitude towards the judge and lawyer
B) your history
C) the seriousness of your offense
The judge may appoint you to community service, counselling or restitution , which is paying for the damage you've done. You may be sent to prison or/and given a criminal record
