Major Generals

In the Battle of Long Island

On the left, the pictures show the American's major Generals: George Washington, Israel Putnam, and William Alexander. On the left, the pictures show the British major Generals: Lord Charles Cornwallis, Sir Henry Clinton, and William Howe.

George Washington: He was the lead commander for the Americans side during the Revolutionary War and many battles within it. Washington was a very experienced general and people believed that he would get them through and win their independence.

Israel Putnam: Putnam was an American army general that assisted George Washington during the Battle of Long Island. He was also popularly known as Old Put and he fought during the Battle of Bunker Hill (1775).

William Alexander: William Alexander was a military commander for the Continental Army. He was George Washington's most loyal military subordinate (lower rank in position). Alexander was also known as Lord Sterling and he previously served as a supply officer during the French and Indian war.

Lord Charles Cornwallis: Charles Cornwallis served under General William Howe during the Battle of Long Island, the New Jersey campaigns, and at the British victory in the Battle of Brandywine. He then came second in command to Sir Henry Clinton.

Sir William Howe: He was the leading general for the the British side during the Battle of Long Island. Sir William Howe was the new British commander-in-chief. He also led the British field to the Battle of Bunker Hill previously.

Sir Henry Clinton: Clinton was a British commander during the battle of Long Island. He was also a politician. In addition to his military service for Britain, he was a member of Parliament for many years before the Revolutionary war.
