Major Events in the Battle of Long Island
General George Washington lead 5 regiments to New York all ready to fight. They were positioned on hills in Brooklyn ready for battle having no idea that the British had lot more soldiers and weapons coming their way. The British had 400 warships, 16 cannons in each, and 1000 soldiers. The British also had the Hessians with them. The British defeated the Americans so badly leaving cannonball fire on the militias camps burning everything. The British general, William Howe got delayed with attacking the forts leaving enough time for George Washington to escape with the rest of the American army. Once everyone left, the fire spread around the small city of Brooklyn ablaze. A small group called the American snipers or sharpshooters did not leave with the rest of the American army. They hid behind trees and shot British generals while the British were riding horses, when they were leaving New York. This was what the British called cheating. They believed that everyone should fight in front of their opponent.
