He became a federalist when he came home. He was elected in to the colonial legislature in 1770. In 1773 he became an attorney general.when the war broke out in 1775 he stood on the patriots side. In the same year he became a member of the first South Carolina provincial congress. That later helped to make South Carolina become a state and brake way from being a part of the british colonies. He later ran for Vice President but lost in 1800. He then ran for president and lost to Thomas Jefferson and James Madison. Until he died he was a federalist and always fought for balance between state and notional powers.
