Roger Williams, originally from Massachusetts, was banished and escaped because of religious persecution. He was welcomed with open arms by Native Americans. The Narragansett and Pequot tribes then gifted him with tons of land, where he founded Rhode Island in 1636. He and his followers created Providence, at the head of Narragansett Bay.
