In general, New England's soil was rocky and filled with hills. Also, the growing seasons were short while the winters were longer and worse. In order to maximize rich soil, the average size of good farmland was small, where it was mainly for feeding families.
Geography and Economy
The economy of Rhode Island was amazing. The bedrock of the economy was agriculture, more specifically farming and fishing. They raised corn, rye, flax, barley, fruits and vegetables there. Additionally, they raised chickens, cows, and sheep. Later on, lumber and shipbuilding became major industries. Sadly, slaves were also introduced to do many jobs, but no legal documents show slave-holding.
