The Transcontinental Railroad

Why did the Transcontinental Railroad get built?

During the mid-1800s many Americans were moving west and until then their was no convenient way to get there. Many people wanted a railroad to be built and only the biggest companies had the power and capital to build one. The US government also wanted more people to move west to boost the economy so they subsidized the construction as well as providing land.
