Mengele had been wounded during his time on the front, so he returned to Germany in January 1943. While in Germany, he began to do research at the Kaiser Wilhelms Institute for Anthropology, Human Genetics, and Eugenics. In April 1943, Mengele received a promotion to SS captain. He would be transferred to Auschwitz on May 30, 1943.
