The Esophagus

After your food leaves your mouth it is pushed down into the esophagus. The esophagus is a 25 cm long muscular tube. The esophagus contains mucus glands that keep the food moist. While your moist food is in your esophagus, it is moved down in a squeezing action by muscle walls. Your food is moved throughout your whole entire digestive tract by esophagus muscles called peristalsis.
