San Carlos Reservation
In 1876 Geronimo and the other Apaches were forced to live in the arid land of San Carlos, in eastern Arizona. Geronimo escaped three times but he surrendered every time. Geronimo then fled to Mexico and eluded the troops for over a decade. They needed more than 3,000 Mexican soldiers to track down Geronimo and his band. He was later arrested and returned to the reservations. In 1881 they returned to a secret camp in the Sierra Madre Mountains.
