It is made up of series of tubes and passages that transport air you breathe. It allows exchange of gases between air, blood, and tissues.

What does the respiratory system do?

It transports/carries materials throughout the body such as nutrients, oxygen, and carbon dioxide.

After the air is breathed in by the nose or mouth, it enters branched tubes, and soon they enter the capillaries that surround it. Then they take the oxygen to the cells.

As the cells pass through the lungs, the cells take in the oxygen, and release the carbon dioxide. Then, the carbon dioxide that was released from the cells are breathed out by the lungs.
