Icons are generally flat panel paintings depicting a holy image or object, and may be carved in stone, embroidered on cloth, painted on wood and printed on paper. However it is believed that free-standing, three-dimensional sculptures of holy figures would be disobeying the commandment to not make 'graven images'.
