How the HASAWA is Implemented

PPE: I was told what I must wear each time I attend work, so that not only I am kept safe from birds pecking at my feet but also so that the loose birds are not harmed if I was to wear big heavy shoes instead of soft soled shoes.

Training: I was given specific training from my employer so that I was fully aware of how to take care of the birds in the correct manor. This included which and how much food to feed each breed of bird dependant of their condition. It also included teaching me the correct way to handle different breeds of birds.

Accidents: If any accident occurs as a result of working at the work place it must be written in an accident book no matter how big or small the accident may be. If you got a cut for example you would have to write in the book as if it was to get infected it would be easily discovered that you got the cut for working. At the bird sanctuary they fill this out after every accident that occurs.

Risk assessments: One of the first things I got given was a risk assessment which warned me of the risks and hazards that could occur in the work place and how high or low a risk was.

Potential risks: There is always a member of staff at the sanctuary at all times so if any potential risks arose then there is always somebody to inform so that they can take action upon it.

Warning signs: there are many warning signs that are stuck on the walls which tell you of the dangers in the workplace but there are also some warning signs on the cages if there is a bird which is too ill to handle or signs to tell you that bird may be difficult to handle so you should ask for help if you need it.
