How Manual Handling is Implimented...

Machinery: In the work place there is no need to use machinery to carry out the tasks, the reason for this is because if a machine was used to handle the birds it would probably take a lot longer and would probably stress them out.

Large loads: At the bird sanctuary large bags of bird seed are put into large tins so that when the smaller tubs of seed in the hospitals are running low you can easily top them up by scooping seeds from the bigger tub into the smaller hospital tubs.

Carrying Out Tasks: If you are not strong enough to carry a bag of seed by yourself you could ask for help from another member of staff so that the task is then carried out by not one but two people changing the way the task is carried out.

Handling Aids: If you wanted to transport more than one bag of seed to another location and you needed to do it fast or your back was starting to hurt you could instead use a sack trolley, this would make it easier on your back and would decrease the time taken to complete the task.

Training required: I was shown how to lift a bag of seed safely so that I was less likely to injured myself.
