Education
Pg. 289 Chapter 13 - Section 1
No public system of education existed when Texas became a state. Most children went to private schools that were established by their communities or their churches. A lot of these schools were log buildings with one room. Governor Elisha M. Pease signed a law that set aside $2 million for a special school fund in 1854. During this time, several colleges and institutes were also created. In 1876, the Permanent School Fund was established to ensure future support for public education.
